This very ancient family
is one of the most distinguished of the
Pavia patriciate, and historically
linked to the city due to its many
members who there enjoyed public office
starting with the twelfth century. Over
the centuries the Giorgi di Vistarino
produced, soldiers, politicians,
clergymen and legal practitioners.
Quite a few were Knights of Malta and
administered a number of Commanderies
belonging to the aforesaid Order.
The Giorgi
added to their surname “di Vistarino” (a
place near Pavia), having inherited it
from Franceschina Beccaria, last of the
branch knows as “of Messer Fiorello”,
who also left them Rocca di Messer
Fiorello (afterwards Rocca dei Giorgi),
and Pietra de’ Giorgi. In addition, the
added the Berlingeri surname, quartering
the latter’s arms with theirs, as stated
in the will of the Marques and Abbot
Andrea Berlingeri. The Giorgi also
participated actively in the wars of the
Italian Risorgimento. In 1897
Carlo Giorgi di Vistarino married the
noble Anna dei Conti Vimercati, daughter
of the patriot and cavalry officer
Ottaviano Vimercati, one of the
protagonists of the Risorgimento
and praised by king Victor Emmanuel II
of Savoy as “the first of the Lombards”.
