Voghera
Ancient IRIA
(founded about
VI sec. a.c. by
the popolations
of Liguri Iriati,
and becamed
Viqueria - Vicus
Iria under the
Romanic
dominations)
boasts the role
of being the
centre of the
Oltrepò area,
where the roads
from Bologna,
Milano, Torino
and Genova.
Milan
and Alessandria
meet up together.
Worthy of mention
are the massive XIV
century Visconti
castle with its
angular towers;
Sant'llario church
in Romanesque style
and the History
Museum at the former
Vittorio Emanuele II
barracks.
Voghera is the
main town in
Oltrepò (and the
second largest
in the province
after Pavia )
and boasts a
thousand years
of history. Its
geographical
location at the
point where the
plain enters the
Staffora valley
and the roads
from Milan,
Piacenza and
Alessandria
converge before
climbing the
Apennine
section, made
this a
crossroads for
traffic at the
end of the Roman
period and
during the
Middle Ages.
Once this city
was enclosed by
14'h-century
walls and these
still mark the
boundaries of
the old city.
The heart of the
city is Piazza
del Duomo -
surrounded by
porticoed
buildings -
dominated by the
17'h-century
collegiate named
after S.
Lorenzo. The
Castello
Visconteo (l4'h
C) dates from
medieval times
and was built
for Galeazzo II
Visconti as a
fortress to
control the
route between
the plain and
the Apennines.
Finally, there
is the church of
S. Ilario (late
12'h C.) more
commonly known
as the Chiesa
Rossa because of
the red colour
of the bricks
used to build
it. Since 1952
it has been the
Tempio Sacrario
della Cavalleria
and contains
insignia,
banners and
mementoes.

e si estende su
una superficie di circa 15000 mq. All'interno dell'ex
Caserma di Cavalleria con stands espositivi; la mostra
mercato dei mezzi agricoli e movimento terra occupa l'area
del Piazzale Fermi con una delle esposizioni più importante
della regione. Fanno da cornice all'evento il luna park, nel
cortile adiacente la fiera, oltre a spettacoli, mostre e
convegni. Negli ultimi tre giorni sono allestite le
tradizionali bancarelle, circa 400, distribuite per le vie
della città.
